TransAlp Val d'Aosta - day 4/5

Michele, you know, it's a vulcan of ideas, he like to bike around the world (Nepal, Tenerife) and to climb and ride the summits in the Alps, sometimes he (and his friends) crosses the frontier of alpinism (Cevedale3769 m, Piz Umbrail 3033 m, Rite 20183 m in winter).
In this summer he decided to perform a two weeks TransAlp between the borders of Italy and France; he and Dario planned a sequence of tremendous uphills and unbelievable downhills, the travel must be done hauling everything necessary to ride, to sleep and to eat.

Two similar weeks for me would be too hard, so I limited myself to the crossing of Val d'Aosta, from Champorcher to Valgrisenche.

Michele, si sa, è un vulcano di idee, gli piace girare il mondo (Nepal, Tenerife) e le cime alpine, sconfinando nel alpinismo (Cevedale3769 m, Piz Umbrail 3033 m, Rite 20183 m in inverno).

Per l'estate ha deciso di fare una Transalp di due settimane fra Italia e Francia, assieme a Dario ha pianificato una serie di salite mostruose e di discese roboanti, il tutto trasportando quanto necessario per pedalare, dormire e mangiare.

Due settimane simili per me sarebbero state troppo impegnative, pertanto mi sono limitato alla traversata della Val d'Aosta, da Champorcher alla Valgrisenche.

The best, the harder, the most beautiful day of the TransAlp.

• the best day: the best weather, the best ascent, the best descent, the best mountain hut, the best campsite;
• the hardest day: most gain elevation, the most dangerous descend (by feet), the longest section with bike on the shoulders;
• the most beautiful day: the most beautiful landscape of Gran Paradiso, the most beautiful valley of Val d'Aosta (Rhêmes valley), the most beautiful mountain seen (Granta Parey, resembles the mountains of the Dolomites), the most beautiful night.

Il migliore, il più duro, il più bel giorno della Transalp.

• Il giorno migliore: il meteo migliore, la migliore salita, la discesa migliore, il miglior rifugio, il campeggio migliore;
• Il giorno più difficile: maggior dislivello, discesa più pericolosa (a piedi), il tratto più lungo con la bici in spalla;
• La più bella giornata: il paesaggio più bello del Gran Paradiso, la più bella valle della Val d'Aosta (Valle di Rhêmes), la più bella montagna vista (Granta Parey, assomiglia alle montagne delle Dolomiti), la più bella notte.

We woke up in the shadows of Valsavarenche, the camping is in a cold site of the valley. We packaged up our luggage, then we crossed some small villages and finally we started the long ascent to Orvielles and Col Entrelor.
The first part of the ascent took place on a very nice street, it is characterized by a sweet slope and a beautiful landscape on the Summit of Gran Paradiso.

Ci siamo svegliati nelle ombre della Valsavarenche, il campeggio si trova in un luogo freddo della valle. Abbiamo impacchettato i bagagli, quindi abbiamo attraversato alcuni piccoli villaggi ed infine, abbiamo iniziato la lunga salita a Orvielles ed al Col Entrelor.
La prima parte della salita si è svolta su una strada molto bella, è caratterizzato da una pendenza dolce e un bellissimo panorama sulla vetta del Gran Paradiso.

In the locality of Orvielles the street ends and a path starts, the very first part is hard to pedal, then the track become less steep, more panoramic and a little bit more dangerous.
In località Orvielles la strada termina ed inizia un percorso, il primissima parte è difficile pedalare, poi la pista diventano meno ripida, più panoramica e un po' di più pericolosa.

The last part  of the ascent it's in a nice valley, there are two small lakes and, behind us, the glaciers of Gran Paradiso. Only the last part of the mountain pass requires to carry the bike, otherwise it's possible to pedal or to push the bike.
L'ultima parte della salita è in una bella valle, ci sono due laghetti e, dietro di noi, troneggiano i ghiacciai del Gran Paradiso. Solamente l'ultima parte del valico richiede di portare la bici in spalla, altrimenti è possibile pedalare o spingere la bicicletta.

On the pass we met some friends, the world is small..., therefore we chatted a bit while we were resting.
Sul passo abbiamo incontrato alcuni amici, il mondo è piccolo ... quindi abbiamo chiacchierato un po' mentre riposevamo.
The descent starts hard, then it become tougher and a little bit dangerous. After the moraine it becomes a beautiful descent, smooth, flow with some technical parts. A great descent (unfortunately I didn't shot many pictures).
La discesa inizia dura, quindi diventa impegnativa ed un po' pericolosa. Dopo la morena diventa è una bella discesa, liscio, flow, con alcune parti tecniche. Un grande discesa! (purtroppo non ho scattato molte foto).

From the very low part of the descent it's possible to see Val di Rhêmes and the second part of the day, the ascent to Goletta's lake.
Dalla parte bassa della discesa è possibile vedere la Val di Rhêmes e la seconda parte della giornata, la salita al lago di Goletta.

In Rhêmes-Notre-Dame we rested, ate, dried tents and cloths, then we started the second ascent of the day. The direction is clear, we headed for a beautiful mountain: Granta Parey, it resembles the mountains of the Dolomites.
In Rhêmes-Notre-Dame ci siamo riposati, abbiamo mangiato, asciugato le tende ed i vestiti, poi abbiamo iniziato la seconda salita della giornata. La direzione è chiara, ci siamo diretti verso una bellissima montagna: Granta Parey, assomiglia alle montagne delle Dolomiti.

The upper valley is closed by a rock step, some waterfalls roar and shine. Above the rock step there is Benevolo mountain hut (link), we ate (again) a soup, it was abundant and delicious.
Above the mountain hut the path is very steep, so we carried the bikes on the shoulders and we started a hard walk.
La valle è chiusa da un salto di roccia, alcune cascate ruggiscono e luccicano. Sopra il salto di roccia c'è rifugio Benevolo (link), abbiamo mangiato (di nuovo) una zuppa, abbondante e deliziosa.
Sopra il rifugio il sentiero è molto ripido, così abbiamo portato le bici in spalla ed abbiamo iniziato la camminata faticosa.

Near Goletta's lake we met some people and a lot of tents. They spent the night in that place because it was a perfect night to watch the falling stars, in the sky there wasn't a cloud, the moon was new and it was the period of the Perseid meteor shower.
Vicino lago di Goletta abbiamo incontrato alcune persone e un sacco di tende. Hanno trascorso la notte in quel luogo perché era una notte perfetta per guardare le stelle cadenti, nel cielo non c'era una nuvola, c'era il novilunio ed era il periodo della sciame  meteorico delle Perseidi.
A wonderful night... To restore ourself after the tiring day we had a bath in a small lake after dusk, the water wasn't cold, we ate (again) bread, cheese, boudin (a type of salami tipical of Val d'Aosta, link) and some bisquits. The skywatchers offered us a glass of white wine, a perfect conclusion of the dinner.
The sky became darker and darker, so we lied down on big stones and we looked for falling stars, we rested an eye, than we rested the other eye, and... obviously we started to sleep... but only after had seen a very long and shiny falling star.
After an undetermined time I woke up, the rock wasn't enough soft for my back, and I went inside the tent waiting for the new day.
Una notte meravigliosa ... Per rinfrancarci dopo la faticosa giornata abbiamo fatto un bagno in un piccolo lago dopo il tramonto, l'acqua non era fredda, abbiamo mangiato (di nuovo) pane, formaggio, boudin (un tipo di salame tipico di Val d''Aosta, link) e alcuni biscotti. I cercatori di stelle cadenti ci hanno offerto un bicchiere di vino bianco, una perfetta conclusione della cena.
Il cielo è diventato sempre più scuro, così ci siamo sdraiati su grandi pietre e abbiamo cercato stelle cadenti, abbiamo riposati un occhio, poi abbiamo riposato l'altro, e ... ovviamente abbiamo iniziato a dormire ... ma solo dopo aver visto una stella cadente molto lunga e brillante.
Dopo un tempo indeterminato mi sono svegliato, la roccia non era abbastanza morbido per la mia schiena, e sono andato all'interno della tenda in attesa del nuovo giorno.
